Fire Pit Safety Tips from Hanover Insurance

  1. Check the weather and avoid using your fire pit on windy days.
  2. Always have an adult present and supervising. Never leave it unattended.
  3. Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
  4. Do not use accelerants to ignite or rekindle flames.
  5. Use a fireproof base such as concrete or gravel, not on grass or a wooden deck.
  6. Assess the area for debris, loose leaves, or objects that could catch on fire.
  7. Check the distance to ensure it is set 10 to 20 feet from objects, buildings, and guests.
  8. Have a bucket of water, hose, sand, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit nearby.
  9. Use wood that has been properly seasoned. Store-bought wood from hardware stores is safer. The length of logs should be less than ¾ the diameter of the pit. Never burn wood on air quality alert days.
  10. Place a screen around the fire.
  11. Douse fires safely.  Never leave a fire to let the embers burn down.
  12. Check local ordinances to make sure your fire pit complies with local fire codes or HOA regulations.

How does a Fire Pit affect my Homeowners’ Insurance?

  • If your fire pit is covered by your homeowners’ insurance policy, it protects your home and property.
  • Whether you are installing a fire pit or already have one, it’s a great time to review your homeowner’s policy with your agent. Your agent can walk you through how this may impact your insurance and ensure you stay protected.
